ORIM Weekly W32 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK August 5-11 |
EDITORIAL
Early August brings peak harvest season and maximum produce diversity. This week we celebrate the immunological abundance of summer gardens and explore how eating the rainbow maximises phytonutrient synergy. Colour diversity on the plate directly translates to immune defence diversity.

Phytonutrient Synergy: The Rainbow Effect
Consuming 30 or more different plant species per week produces greater microbiome diversity than any single superfood intervention. A 2023 study in the American Gut Project analysed 10,000 participants and found that plant diversity was the single strongest predictor of microbial alpha diversity, which in turn correlated with 40% lower inflammatory marker levels and enhanced vaccine responsiveness.
Summer Evening Light and Delayed Sleep Phase
Extended summer twilight delays melatonin onset by 60-90 minutes compared to winter. A 2024 study in Current Biology showed that wearing amber-tinted glasses after 20h in summer advanced melatonin onset by 45 minutes and increased deep sleep by 20%. Protecting the nocturnal immune window during long summer evenings requires active light management.
Community Supported Agriculture and Nutritional Outcomes
CSA members consume 50% more vegetable servings and 30% greater produce variety than non-members. A 2023 study in Public Health Nutrition showed that CSA participation increased plasma carotenoid levels by 25% and reduced CRP inflammatory markers by 15%. Direct farm-to-consumer distribution maximises both freshness and nutritional impact of seasonal produce.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Purple Basil: Anthocyanin-Rich Herb
Purple basil (Ocimum basilicum var. purpurascens) contains 19 mg anthocyanins per gram alongside rosmarinic acid, a potent anti-allergic compound. Its essential oils include eugenol and linalool with demonstrated antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens. August purple basil from outdoor cultivation reaches peak essential oil and anthocyanin concentrations under full summer UV.
Usage: Add purple basil raw to finished dishes. Heat degrades anthocyanins and volatilises essential oils within 2 minutes of cooking.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► American Gut Project publishes largest-ever dataset linking plant diversity to immune health.
► Swiss CSA cooperatives grow to 150 farms serving 25,000 families nationwide.
► Blue-light-blocking glasses sales increase 40% during summer months as days lengthen.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Rainbow vegetable Buddha bowl with tahini, avocado, and microgreens | Morning phytodiversity: 10 or more plant species at breakfast maximises morning immune priming |
TUESDAY | Heirloom tomato and purple basil bruschetta with balsamic glaze | Midday dual antioxidants: lycopene plus anthocyanins provide broad-spectrum UV protection |
WEDNESDAY | Grilled whole mackerel with fennel, blood orange, and olive salad | Lunch EPA: mackerel omega-3 supports afternoon anti-inflammatory resolution pathways |
THURSDAY | Rainbow chard and white bean gratin with Gruyere and nutmeg | Afternoon betalains: chard pigments support afternoon liver detoxification pathways |
FRIDAY | Thai green papaya salad with grilled chicken and peanuts | Evening papain: green papaya enzyme supports overnight protein digestion and gut repair |
SATURDAY | Mixed berry tart with pastry cream and fresh mint | Late morning polyphenols: diverse berry anthocyanins provide multi-pathway antioxidant defence |
SUNDAY | BBQ lamb burgers with beetroot relish, rocket, and sweet potato fries | Evening nitrate and zinc: beetroot NO plus lamb zinc for overnight vascular and immune support |
ORIM Tip: Aim for 5 different colours on every plate: red (lycopene), orange (carotenoids), green (chlorophyll), purple (anthocyanins), and white (allicin). Each colour represents a distinct class of immune-modulating phytonutrients.
