ORIM Weekly W31 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK July 29 - August 4 |
EDITORIAL
The transition from July to August brings the warmest temperatures and the start of holiday season. This week we explore travel immunology and how dietary preparation can protect against infections encountered during summer travel. Smart nutrition before departure strengthens mucosal defences.

Travel-Associated Immune Suppression
Air travel causes transient immunosuppression through cabin pressure dehydration, circadian disruption, and stress hormones. A 2023 study in Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease showed that travellers have a 3-fold higher risk of upper respiratory infections within 7 days of a long-haul flight. Pre-loading with vitamin C (1 g), zinc (30 mg), and probiotics 5 days before travel reduces risk by 50%.
Jet Lag and Immune Circadian Disruption
Crossing more than 3 time zones desynchronises peripheral immune cell clocks from the central SCN clock for 4-7 days. A 2024 study in Science Translational Medicine showed that timed light exposure and meal timing at the destination reset immune rhythms 40% faster than unmanaged jet lag. Eating breakfast at local time is the strongest peripheral clock entrainer.
Mobile Soil Testing and Nutrient Mapping
Handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers now provide field-level soil mineral analysis in 60 seconds. A 2023 paper in Geoderma showed that mobile soil testing enabled precision fertilisation that increased crop zinc by 35% while reducing total fertiliser use by 25%. Real-time soil data transforms agricultural nutrient management from guesswork to science.

Ginger: Travel Immunity and Anti-Nausea
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains gingerols and shogaols that inhibit TNF-alpha and IL-1beta production while enhancing gastric motility. Its 5-HT3 receptor antagonism provides anti-nausea effects equivalent to pharmaceutical antiemetics. Fresh summer ginger has peak gingerol content, making August an ideal time to prepare ginger preparations for travel season.
Travel kit: Pack crystallised ginger and ginger tea bags. Both retain active gingerols and provide portable immune and digestive support.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► European airport pharmacies report 200% spike in probiotic sales during July-August travel peak.
► WHO issues updated traveller's health advisory emphasising circadian rhythm management.
► Portable soil testing technology adopted by 10,000 smallholder farms in Sub-Saharan Africa.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Ginger-turmeric immunity shot with lemon, cayenne, and raw honey | Morning anti-inflammatory: gingerol-curcumin synergy at peak morning immune activation |
TUESDAY | Greek salad with vine tomatoes, cucumber, olives, and oregano | Midday hydration: high-water vegetables with olive oil electrolytes for heat management |
WEDNESDAY | Grilled tuna steak with nicoise vegetables and tapenade | Lunch selenium: tuna selenomethionine supports afternoon antioxidant enzyme function |
THURSDAY | Coconut and ginger chicken soup (Tom Kha Gai style) | Afternoon lauric acid: coconut MCTs provide antimicrobial support during travel preparation |
FRIDAY | Crab and avocado tartare with citrus dressing and micro-herbs | Evening zinc: crab zinc pre-loads immune reserves before weekend travel |
SATURDAY | Mango and sticky rice with coconut cream and toasted sesame | Late morning beta-carotene: mango retinol precursor supports mucosal barrier integrity |
SUNDAY | Slow-roasted pork belly with apple sauce, fennel slaw, and new potatoes | Evening B1: pork thiamine supports overnight glucose metabolism during pre-travel stress |
ORIM Tip: Start a probiotic supplement 5 days before international travel. Saccharomyces boulardii specifically prevents traveller's diarrhoea and survives at body temperature, making it the gold-standard travel probiotic.
