ORIM Weekly W33 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK August 12-18 |
EDITORIAL
Mid-August is the traditional period of Perseids meteor showers and late summer abundance. This week we explore the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3-rich oily fish at their peak summer condition. Our chronobiology segment reveals how stargazing darkness promotes melatonin and immune repair.

Omega-3 Resolution Pathways: Beyond Anti-Inflammation
EPA and DHA are precursors to specialised pro-resolving mediators (SPMs): resolvins, protectins, and maresins. A 2023 review in the Journal of Clinical Investigation showed that SPMs actively resolve inflammation rather than merely suppressing it, clearing cellular debris and restoring tissue homeostasis. An omega-3 index above 8% ensures adequate SPM production capacity.
Darkness Exposure and Melatonin Amplitude
True darkness (less than 1 lux) for 8 continuous hours increases melatonin peak amplitude by 50% compared to dim-light conditions (5-10 lux). A 2024 study in PNAS showed that just one night of complete darkness reset suppressed melatonin rhythms within 48 hours. Summer stargazing away from light pollution provides both melatonin rescue and circadian re-entrainment.
Seaweed Biorefinery and Functional Food Ingredients
Integrated seaweed biorefineries extract fucoidan, alginate, and omega-3 DHA from brown macroalgae with 90% material utilisation. A 2023 paper in Trends in Biotechnology showed that fucoidan activates NK cells with potency comparable to beta-glucan supplements. Marine biomass offers a sustainable, land-free source of immune-modulating polysaccharides and essential fatty acids.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Sardines: Omega-3 and Calcium Superfood
A 100 g serving of sardines provides 1.5 g EPA+DHA, 382 mg calcium (from edible bones), 5 mcg vitamin D, and 48 mcg selenium. This single food addresses four of the most common nutritional deficiencies simultaneously. August sardines from cold Atlantic waters contain peak fat content, making late summer the ideal season for this nutritional powerhouse.
Sustainability: Sardines are among the most sustainable seafood choices. Their short lifespan means minimal mercury bioaccumulation.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Perseids meteor shower peaks August 12-13 with optimal dark sky viewing in Alpine regions.
► Norwegian seaweed biorefinery produces 50 tonnes of fucoidan annually for supplement market.
► Omega-3 index testing now available in Swiss pharmacies without prescription.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Sardines on sourdough with lemon zest, parsley, and pickled shallots | Morning omega-3: sardine EPA initiates daytime resolvin production for anti-inflammatory action |
TUESDAY | Seaweed and cucumber salad with sesame, ginger, and rice vinegar | Midday fucoidan: brown seaweed polysaccharides activate NK cells during immune surveillance peak |
WEDNESDAY | Grilled salmon with corn salsa, black beans, and lime crema | Lunch DHA: salmon docosahexaenoic acid supports afternoon neural and immune membrane fluidity |
THURSDAY | Aubergine parmigiana with mozzarella, basil, and garlic bread | Afternoon nasunin: aubergine anthocyanin protects cell membranes from afternoon oxidative stress |
FRIDAY | Pan-fried John Dory with samphire, capers, and brown butter | Evening iodine: samphire and fish provide thyroid minerals for overnight TSH-driven synthesis |
SATURDAY | Plum and almond frangipane tart with creme fraiche | Late morning sorbitol: plum natural sugar provides gentle prebiotic effect for gut microbiome |
SUNDAY | Slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with roasted summer vegetables and tzatziki | Evening carnosine: lamb provides histidine dipeptides for overnight muscular antioxidant protection |
ORIM Tip: Spend one night per week in complete darkness: no screens, no nightlights, blackout curtains closed. A single night of true darkness can boost melatonin amplitude by 50%, rescuing summer-suppressed immune repair cycles.
