ORIM Weekly W38 2022
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 38 September 19-25, 2022 |
EDITORIAL
Herbs and spices are concentrated sources of bioactive compounds that punch far above their caloric weight. This week, we revisit the culinary pharmacy with a focus on autumn herbs that support immune transition as the season changes.

Rosemary and Cognitive Function
Carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid from rosemary activate the Nrf2/Keap1 antioxidant pathway in neural tissue. A 2021 study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that participants who consumed rosemary-infused olive oil daily for 6 weeks showed 15% improvement in memory recall speed and accuracy. Even the aroma of rosemary essential oil increased alertness scores by 30% in a controlled aromatherapy trial.
Oregano: Europe's Wild Antibiotic
Oregano essential oil contains carvacrol and thymol, compounds with documented antibacterial activity against antibiotic-resistant strains including MRSA and VRE. A 2021 review in Frontiers in Microbiology detailed how carvacrol disrupts bacterial cell membranes and inhibits biofilm formation. Culinary doses in food provide meaningful antimicrobial effects in the digestive tract, supporting gut pathogen resistance during autumn pathogen season.
Sage and Menopausal Symptom Relief
Salvia officinalis (common sage) has been used since antiquity for hot flash management. A 2021 randomized controlled trial in Menopause journal demonstrated that 280mg daily sage extract reduced hot flash frequency by 50% and severity by 64% over 8 weeks. The mechanism involves phytoestrogen-like binding to estrogen receptors and thermoregulatory modulation through GABAergic pathways.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
Thyme contains thymol, a monoterpene phenol with potent antiseptic and expectorant properties. European Pharmacopoeia recognizes thyme extract for upper respiratory tract infections, cough, and bronchitis. Its flavonoids including apigenin and luteolin provide anti-inflammatory support. Fresh thyme delivers significantly more volatile oils than dried, though both forms retain therapeutic value when used in cooking and infusions.
Steep 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme in boiling water for 7 minutes with honey and lemon for a traditional European respiratory support tea. Drink 2-3 cups daily at the first sign of throat irritation.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► AUTUMN: September equinox marks the official start of autumn, with Swiss herb gardens offering final harvests of basil, thyme, and rosemary before the first mountain frosts.
► RESEARCH: University of Nottingham demonstrates that rosemary extract added to meat before grilling reduces carcinogenic heterocyclic amine formation by 70-80% during high-heat cooking.
► TRADITION: Swiss Alpine herbal tradition (Kraeuterkunde) receives UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage, preserving centuries of mountain botanical knowledge.
