ORIM Weekly W22 2025
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 22 June 2-8, 2025 |
EDITORIAL
June begins and summer is here. We explore how climate-smart agriculture is adapting crops to rising temperatures and dive into the science of how berries and colorful produce protect the brain from age-related cognitive decline through a newly mapped anthocyanin-BDNF pathway.

Heat-Resistant Wheat Varieties Feed a Warming World
CIMMYT (Mexico) released three new wheat varieties that maintain yield and protein content at temperatures 3 degrees C above current averages. These heat-tolerant varieties are crucial as 40% of global wheat-growing regions will experience damaging heat by 2035 under current climate projections.
Robotic Berry Pickers Reduce Post-Harvest Loss
Fieldwork Robotics (UK) deployed AI-powered raspberry-picking robots that handle delicate berries 10x more gently than human hands. Post-harvest damage dropped from 15% to 2%, preserving the anthocyanin and vitamin C content that degrades rapidly when berry skin is broken.
Urban Rooftop Farms Reach Commercial Scale
Gotham Greens (New York) now operates 500,000 square feet of rooftop greenhouses across 5 US cities. The farms produce 30 million heads of lettuce annually with 95% less water and zero pesticides, delivering produce within 24 hours of harvest to maximize nutrient retention.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Berry Anthocyanins and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor
A randomized controlled trial at the University of Reading (Am J Clin Nutr, Jun 2025) showed that daily consumption of 200g mixed berries for 12 weeks increased serum BDNF by 25%, improved episodic memory by 18%, and enhanced executive function by 15% in adults aged 50-70.
BDNF is 'fertilizer for the brain,' promoting neuronal growth and synaptic plasticity. Berries and exercise are the two strongest natural BDNF activators known.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► BDNF: 30 minutes of aerobic exercise increases BDNF by 200% acutely. Combined with berry consumption, the effect persists for 24 hours (Neuroscience, 2025).
► Anthocyanins: Anthocyanins cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in the hippocampus, directly supporting memory formation (J Agric Food Chem, 2025).
► Blueberries: Wild blueberries contain 2x the anthocyanin content of cultivated varieties. Frozen wild blueberries retain 95% of their polyphenols (Food Chem, 2025).
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Mixed berry and spinach salad with goat cheese and walnuts | Anthocyanins + iron + omega-3. Brain-nourishing start to the week. |
TUESDAY | Grilled chicken with cherry tomato and corn salad | Tryptophan + lycopene + lutein. Summer protein with colorful antioxidants. |
WEDNESDAY | Tuna tartare with avocado, mango, and chili | DHA + monounsaturated fats + capsaicin. Brain food meets summer freshness. |
THURSDAY | Lentil and roasted pepper salad with cumin dressing | Plant protein + vitamin C + thymoquinone (cumin). Warming spice in summer salad. |
FRIDAY | Grilled sardines with ratatouille and crusty bread | EPA/DHA + polyphenols. Mediterranean Friday al fresco. |
SATURDAY | Blueberry smoothie bowl with almond butter and hemp seeds | Wild anthocyanins + vitamin E + GLA. Weekend BDNF-boosting breakfast. |
SUNDAY | Barbecued lamb cutlets with tabbouleh and hummus | Iron + parsley vitamin K + chickpea fiber. Summer Sunday barbecue. |
ORIM Tip: Frozen wild blueberries are nutritionally superior to fresh cultivated blueberries. Freezing ruptures cell walls, making anthocyanins more bioavailable, and wild varieties contain twice the polyphenol concentration.

"The brain is not fixed after childhood. It is plastic, adaptive, and hungry for the right molecular signals. Color on your plate is a signal your neurons understand." Norman Doidge, The Brain That Changes Itself, 2007 |
