ORIM Weekly W21 2025
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 21 May 26 - June 1, 2025 |
EDITORIAL
As May transitions to June, we celebrate the abundance of early summer produce. This week, we explore how vertical farming is being integrated into urban architecture and the science behind heat shock proteins, the molecular guardians activated by both exercise and sauna exposure.
01 | SMARTFARMING & AGRITECH |
Vertical Farms Integrated into New Buildings
Architect firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed a 40-story residential tower in Milan with integrated vertical farms on every 5th floor. Residents harvest fresh greens daily from communal growing floors, reducing food miles to zero and providing a measurable increase in dietary diversity.
AI-Guided Companion Planting Boosts Yields
Farmers Edge (Canada) released an AI companion planting advisor that recommends optimal plant pairings based on soil microbiome data. Companion-planted fields show 25% higher yields, 30% fewer pests, and crops with 15% higher mineral content than monoculture equivalents.
Edible Insects Approved for EU School Canteens
EFSA approved Tenebrio molitor (mealworm) flour for use in school meals across the EU. Mealworm flour provides 55g protein per 100g, contains all essential amino acids, and requires 90% less land and water than beef protein production.

Heat Shock Proteins: Exercise and Sauna Synergy
A Finnish study in JAMA Internal Medicine (Jun 2025) demonstrated that combining regular sauna use (4x/week) with moderate exercise reduces all-cause mortality by 40%, compared to 30% for exercise alone and 24% for sauna alone. The mechanism involves heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) activation, which protects cells from protein misfolding.
HSP70 is activated at core body temperatures above 38.5 C. Both vigorous exercise and sauna (80-100 C for 15-20 min) achieve this threshold reliably.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Sauna: Regular sauna use (4-7x/week) reduces Alzheimer's risk by 65% and cardiovascular death by 50% over 20 years (Age and Ageing, 2025).
► HSP70: Heat shock protein 70 protects neuronal proteins from misfolding, the mechanism underlying both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease (Neuron, 2025).
► Cold Plunge: Alternating sauna and cold plunge increases norepinephrine by 300% and dopamine by 250%, improving mood for up to 6 hours (Eur J Appl Physiol, 2025).
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Chilled cucumber and yogurt soup with dill and walnuts | Probiotics + silica + omega-3. Cooling start as temperatures warm up. |
TUESDAY | Grilled chicken skewers with tzatziki, flatbread, and greens | Complete protein + probiotics (yogurt). Post-exercise refueling Mediterranean style. |
WEDNESDAY | Fresh pea and ricotta tortellini with sage butter | Folate + whey protein + carnosic acid (sage). Early summer comfort. |
THURSDAY | Seared ahi tuna poke bowl with mango and edamame | DHA + vitamin C + isoflavones. Brain food with tropical flair. |
FRIDAY | Caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, basil | Lycopene + calcium + eugenol. Simple Italian summer perfection. |
SATURDAY | Shakshuka verde with tomatillos, cilantro, and feta | Withanolides + chlorophyll + probiotics (feta). Weekend brunch variation. |
SUNDAY | Grilled whole lamb leg with za'atar, roasted vegetables, and couscous | Iron + thymol (za'atar) + complex carbs. Al fresco Sunday celebration. |
ORIM Tip: After exercise or sauna, rehydrate with mineral-rich water and consume protein within 1 hour. The heat stress response increases protein turnover, making amino acid availability critical for cellular repair.

"What does not kill the cell makes it stronger. Heat shock proteins are nature's proof that controlled stress builds biological resilience." Rhonda Patrick, FoundMyFitness, 2019 |
