ORIM Weekly W20 2025
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 20 May 19-25, 2025 |
EDITORIAL
Late May and summer is on the horizon. We investigate how AI-powered genomics is enabling nutrigenomics at scale, and explore the role of omega-3 fatty acids in resolving chronic inflammation through a newly discovered class of lipid mediators called specialized pro-resolving mediators.

Consumer Nutrigenomics Goes Mainstream
23andMe launched a nutrigenomics module that analyzes 78 genetic variants affecting nutrient metabolism. Users receive personalized recommendations for 40 micronutrients based on their genetic profile. Early data shows adherence to genetic recommendations improves biomarker outcomes by 25% over generic guidelines.
Underground Farming in Abandoned Mines
Growing Underground (London) expanded its hydroponic farm in repurposed WWII tunnels to 10,000 square meters. The constant 16-degree temperature eliminates heating costs, and the controlled environment produces herbs and microgreens with 40% higher essential oil content than surface-grown equivalents.
Machine Learning Predicts Mycotoxin Contamination
A new ML model from EFSA predicts aflatoxin contamination risk in grain harvests 60 days before harvest with 88% accuracy, using weather, soil, and satellite data. Early warning allows farmers to apply biological controls, preventing 20 million tonnes of contaminated grain from entering the food supply.

SPMs: How Omega-3s Actually Resolve Inflammation
Professor Charles Serhan's team at Harvard (Nature Reviews Immunology, May 2025) published the definitive review of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs): resolvins, protectins, and maresins derived from EPA and DHA. These lipid molecules actively resolve inflammation rather than just suppressing it, enabling tissue repair.
SPMs explain why omega-3 supplementation takes 8-12 weeks to show full effect. The body needs time to build adequate SPM production capacity from EPA and DHA precursors.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Omega-3: An omega-3 index above 8% (measured in red blood cells) is associated with 35% lower cardiovascular mortality compared to below 4% (Am J Clin Nutr, 2025).
► Resolution: Aspirin triggers the production of aspirin-triggered resolvins from omega-3s, a mechanism that partly explains aspirin's cardioprotective effect (PNAS, 2025).
► DHA: DHA constitutes 40% of brain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Low DHA status correlates with accelerated cognitive decline (Alzheimer's & Dementia, 2025).
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Grilled mackerel with fennel and blood orange salad | EPA/DHA + anethole + hesperidin. SPM precursor loading on Monday. |
TUESDAY | Walnut-crusted chicken with roasted vegetables and quinoa | ALA (walnuts) + complete protein + minerals. Plant and animal omega synergy. |
WEDNESDAY | Sardine bruschetta with cherry tomatoes and basil | Concentrated EPA/DHA + lycopene + eugenol. Mediterranean omega-3 powerhouse. |
THURSDAY | Chia seed pudding with mango and coconut cream | ALA + vitamin A + MCTs. Plant-based omega-3 with tropical antioxidants. |
FRIDAY | Seared tuna with wasabi, pickled ginger, and brown rice | DHA + allyl isothiocyanate (wasabi) + gingerol. Japanese-inspired brain food. |
SATURDAY | Smoked salmon eggs Benedict with hollandaise and spinach | EPA/DHA + choline + iron. Weekend brunch for cognitive and cardiovascular health. |
SUNDAY | Herb-grilled whole trout with lemon butter and asparagus | Omega-3 + glutathione precursors. Fresh-from-the-stream spring Sunday dinner. |
ORIM Tip: To build optimal SPM production, consume fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines) at least 3 times per week for 8-12 weeks. This is the time needed to saturate cell membranes with EPA and DHA.

"Inflammation is not the enemy. Unresolved inflammation is. The body has elegant resolution mechanisms, but they require the right molecular raw materials." Charles Serhan, Harvard Medical School, 2014 |
