ORIM Weekly W24 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK June 10-16 |
EDITORIAL
The week before the solstice brings maximum daylight and intense biological rhythms. This week we explore how peak UV exposure triggers both protective and damaging skin immune responses. Dietary carotenoids serve as an internal photoprotection layer, and our AgriTech section examines UV management in protected cultivation.

UV-Induced Immunosuppression and Dietary Photoprotection
UV-B radiation induces local immunosuppression by activating regulatory T-cells via cis-urocanic acid. While protective against sunburn inflammation, this suppression increases skin infection risk. A 2023 study in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that 16 mg daily beta-carotene plus 3 mg astaxanthin reduced UV-induced immunosuppression by 50% over 8 weeks.
Pre-Solstice Light and Peak Serotonin Production
Serotonin synthesis in the raphe nuclei reaches annual maximum in the week surrounding the summer solstice. A 2024 study in Translational Psychiatry demonstrated that this serotonin peak correlates with a 30% increase in T-cell serotonin receptor expression, enhancing chemotaxis and cytokine production. Maximum daylight exposure during this week has outsized immune benefits.
Photo-Selective Greenhouse Films for Optimal Nutrition
Greenhouse films that selectively transmit UV-A while blocking UV-B increase crop polyphenol content by 35% without causing plant stress damage. A 2023 paper in Postharvest Biology and Technology showed that spectral-selective cultivation produced strawberries with higher antioxidant capacity than either full-sun or fully protected environments. Precision light management is AgriTech's nutritional frontier.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Apricot: Beta-Carotene Jewel
Fresh apricots provide 96 mcg RAE beta-carotene per fruit, with peak concentrations in mid-June harvests. Their flavonoid profile includes catechin and epicatechin, which synergise with carotenoids for skin photoprotection. The stone fruit family uniquely combines carotenoid and polyphenol antioxidant systems, offering broader UV defence than either class alone.
Ripeness: Fully orange-red apricots with slight give contain 40% more beta-carotene than firm, pale specimens.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► WHO updates UV index guidelines with dietary photoprotection recommendations for the first time.
► Swiss greenhouse consortium invests in UV-selective film technology across 50 hectares.
► Serotonin and sunlight study makes front page of Nature Neuroscience summer special issue.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Apricot and almond overnight oats with cardamom and honey | Morning beta-carotene: early carotenoid intake begins skin accumulation before peak UV hours |
TUESDAY | Heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad with basil and aged balsamic | Midday lycopene: cooked and raw tomato mix provides diverse carotenoid isomers at lunch |
WEDNESDAY | Grilled swordfish with mango salsa, black beans, and coconut rice | Lunch selenium: swordfish selenomethionine supports afternoon thyroid and antioxidant function |
THURSDAY | Roasted carrot and orange soup with ginger and toasted cumin | Afternoon beta-carotene: double carotenoid dose from carrot and orange during UV peak hours |
FRIDAY | Pan-seared duck breast with cherry and port reduction and spring greens | Evening anthocyanins: cherry polyphenols provide overnight anti-inflammatory action |
SATURDAY | Smoked salmon and avocado poke bowl with edamame and sesame | Late morning astaxanthin: salmon carotenoid provides skin photoprotection for weekend outdoor activity |
SUNDAY | BBQ spatchcock chicken with corn on the cob and coleslaw | Evening complete protein: whole chicken amino acids support overnight muscle and immune repair |
ORIM Tip: Eat orange and red fruits 2-3 hours before sun exposure. Carotenoid absorption and skin deposition require time; consuming them during or after sun exposure provides no immediate photoprotective benefit.
