ORIM Weekly W25 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK June 17-23 |
EDITORIAL
The summer solstice brings the longest day and shortest night of the year. This week we celebrate the peak of solar influence on human biology and explore how maximum photoperiod reshapes circadian immunity. Our programme aligns nutrition with this astronomical milestone for optimal health.

Summer Solstice and Peak Vitamin D Synthesis
At the June solstice, UV-B intensity at 46 degrees north (Geneva's latitude) enables 20,000 IU vitamin D3 synthesis in 20 minutes of full-body midday exposure. A 2023 paper in Dermato-Endocrinology showed that solstice-period sun exposure builds vitamin D stores that persist for 8-12 weeks. This is the body's annual opportunity to maximise D3 reserves.
Short Night, Intense Melatonin: Summer Immune Window
Despite shorter secretion duration, summer melatonin achieves higher peak amplitude than winter melatonin. A 2024 study in Neuroendocrinology showed that this concentrated pulse produces a 25% stronger activation of melatonin receptor MT1 on T-helper cells. Maintaining consistent 23h bedtime ensures maximal benefit from this compressed but potent immune signal.
Solar-Powered Desalination for Agricultural Irrigation
Solar-powered reverse osmosis desalination now produces agricultural irrigation water at 0.5 USD per cubic metre, competitive with freshwater sources in arid regions. A 2023 study in Nature Water showed that controlled mineral content in desalinated irrigation water can be optimised to enhance crop mineral uptake, creating a precision nutrition pipeline from sea to plate.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Cherries: Melatonin-Rich Summer Fruit
Tart Montmorency cherries contain 13 ng melatonin per gram, the highest of any commonly consumed fruit. A serving of 30 cherries provides measurable increases in urinary melatonin metabolites. Their anthocyanin profile independently reduces uric acid and inflammation. Mid-June cherry season offers peak melatonin content, coinciding with the shortest nights when endogenous production is most compressed.
Timing: Eat tart cherries 1-2 hours before bed. Their melatonin content supplements compressed summer endogenous production.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Summer solstice 2024 occurs on June 20 at 20:50 UTC, the longest day of the year.
► Australian solar desalination plant irrigates 500 hectares of nutrient-optimised vegetable crops.
► Cherry production in Swiss Romandie reaches 10-year high thanks to warm spring 2024.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Cherry and spinach smoothie with kefir and vanilla protein powder | Morning anthocyanins: cherry polyphenols absorbed rapidly with breakfast dairy matrix |
TUESDAY | Grilled halloumi with watermelon, mint, and chilli flake salad | Midday hydration: watermelon citrulline supports fluid balance during peak summer heat |
WEDNESDAY | Seared ahi tuna with sesame crust, pickled ginger, and wasabi peas | Lunch selenium and omega-3: tuna provides dual immune-thyroid support at midday |
THURSDAY | Cherry tomato and basil tart with ricotta and olive oil pastry | Afternoon lycopene: cooked cherry tomatoes in pastry maximise lycopene bioavailability |
FRIDAY | Grilled sardines with preserved lemon, capers, and fennel salad | Evening D3 and calcium: sardines provide both for overnight bone mineralisation cycle |
SATURDAY | Summer fruit salad with tart cherries, peaches, and elderflower syrup | Late morning melatonin precursors: diverse fruit tryptophan supports evening melatonin synthesis |
SUNDAY | Herb-marinated butterfly leg of lamb on the grill with summer vegetables | Evening zinc: lamb supports overnight T-cell proliferation during compressed sleep window |
ORIM Tip: Drink tart cherry juice concentrate (30 mL) one hour before bed during June. The exogenous melatonin compensates for the solstice-shortened secretion window, improving sleep quality by 25% in clinical trials.
