ORIM Weekly W19 2022
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 19 May 9-15, 2022 |
EDITORIAL
B vitamins are the unsung heroes of cellular energy metabolism, nervous system function, and DNA synthesis. This week, we spotlight each B vitamin's unique role and why deficiencies are surprisingly common even in well-fed populations.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency: A Hidden Epidemic
An estimated 6% of adults under 60 and 20% over 60 are B12 deficient in developed countries. A 2021 review in the New England Journal of Medicine highlighted that B12 deficiency causes irreversible neurological damage if untreated, including peripheral neuropathy and cognitive decline. Metformin use, proton pump inhibitors, and plant-exclusive diets increase risk. Methylcobalamin is the preferred supplemental form.
Folate, Methylation, and Epigenetics
Folate (vitamin B9) donates methyl groups essential for DNA methylation, the epigenetic process that silences or activates genes. A 2021 study in Epigenetics demonstrated that maternal folate status during pregnancy influences offspring gene expression patterns persisting into adulthood. The MTHFR gene polymorphism, affecting 30-40% of the population, impairs folate metabolism and may require methylfolate supplementation.
Niacin (B3) and NAD+ for Cellular Aging
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), derived from niacin, declines by 50% between ages 40 and 60. A landmark trial in Science (2021) showed that nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplementation restored NAD+ levels and improved mitochondrial function in middle-aged adults. NAD+ is essential for sirtuin activation, DNA repair, and the circadian clock machinery, making it central to healthy aging strategies.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Nutritional Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)
Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast strain fortified with B-complex vitamins, providing a complete B-vitamin profile in just two tablespoons. It delivers 4mcg of vitamin B12 per serving, meeting the full daily requirement. Its savory, umami-cheese flavor makes it a versatile seasoning for plant-based cooking. Beta-glucans from its cell walls additionally stimulate innate immune function through dectin-1 receptor activation.
Store nutritional yeast in an airtight container away from light. Sprinkle on popcorn, pasta, soups, and salads for a cheesy flavor that delivers complete B-vitamin coverage without dairy.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► AGING: Clinical trial of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) in Japan shows improved muscle function and insulin sensitivity in elderly participants after 10 weeks.
► NUTRITION: British Vegan Society updates B12 supplementation guidelines, recommending 2000mcg cyanocobalamin weekly or 50mcg daily for all individuals on plant-exclusive diets.
► RESEARCH: Karolinska Institute identifies B6 deficiency as an independent risk factor for severe COVID-19 outcomes, suggesting routine screening in hospitalized patients.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Nutritional yeast mac and cheese with roasted cherry tomatoes and basil | Lunch (12:00) - complete B-vitamin delivery in a comforting plant-based dish |
TUESDAY | Grilled liver pate on toast with cornichons and mixed green salad | Lunch (12:30) - liver is nature's most concentrated B12 and folate source |
WEDNESDAY | Edamame and avocado poke bowl with brown rice and nori strips | Lunch (12:00) - folate from edamame plus nori B12 for methylation support |
THURSDAY | Turkey and cranberry sandwich on whole-grain bread with coleslaw | Lunch (12:30) - turkey provides niacin (B3) for NAD+ production pathways |
FRIDAY | Mussels in white wine with parsley, shallots, and crusty bread | Dinner (19:00) - mussels provide 20mcg B12 per serving, the highest of any food |
SATURDAY | Eggs florentine with wilted spinach, hollandaise, and English muffin | Brunch (10:30) - eggs deliver B12, folate, and choline for complete methylation |
SUNDAY | Slow-cooked beef stew with root vegetables, pearl barley, and herbs | Lunch (12:30) - grass-fed beef provides the full B-vitamin complex naturally |
ORIM Tip: If you take a proton pump inhibitor or metformin, ask your doctor to check your B12 levels annually. These common medications impair B12 absorption, and early supplementation prevents irreversible neurological damage.
