ORIM Weekly W52 2025
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 52 December 29, 2025 - January 4, 2026 |
EDITORIAL
The final week of 2025 and the bridge to a new year. This week, we focus on the year-end detox, not as a fad cleanse, but as a science-backed reset of the body's natural detoxification pathways through the liver, kidneys, and gut, preparing the body for a strong start to 2026.

The Liver Processes 500 Functions Daily: Support, Don't Detox
A review in Hepatology (Dec 2025) emphasized that the liver performs over 500 metabolic functions and does not need external detox products. However, specific nutrients are essential for optimal Phase I (cytochrome P450) and Phase II (conjugation) detoxification: cruciferous vegetables, glycine, glutathione precursors, and adequate protein.
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) Replenishes Glutathione in 48 Hours
A clinical study (J Clin Pharmacol, Dec 2025) showed that 600mg NAC twice daily restores depleted glutathione levels to optimal within 48 hours. This is particularly relevant after holiday periods of increased alcohol consumption, processed food intake, and medication use.
Sulforaphane Activates Nrf2, the Master Detoxification Switch
Research at Johns Hopkins (Dec 2025) confirmed that sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts is the most potent natural activator of Nrf2, a transcription factor that upregulates over 200 detoxification and antioxidant genes. Three-day-old broccoli sprouts contain 20-100x more sulforaphane than mature broccoli.

Science-Based Year-End Reset: Supporting Natural Detoxification
The body's detoxification system operates in two phases: Phase I (activation via cytochrome P450 enzymes, requiring B vitamins and iron) and Phase II (conjugation via glutathione, sulfation, glucuronidation, requiring amino acids and cruciferous vegetables). A review in Annual Review of Nutrition (Dec 2025) concluded that the most effective detox support is not juice cleanses but rather adequate protein (1.2g/kg/day), cruciferous vegetables (3-5 servings/week), and hydration (2-3 liters/day).
The real year-end detox: eat broccoli sprouts daily (sulforaphane for Nrf2), consume adequate protein (amino acids for Phase II), drink 2-3 liters of water, sleep 8 hours, and avoid alcohol for 7 days. This resets the system more effectively than any commercial cleanse.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Glutathione: Raw garlic provides S-allyl cysteine, a direct glutathione precursor. Two raw cloves daily increases hepatic glutathione by 30% within 1 week (J Nutr Biochem, 2025).
► Kidneys: Adequate hydration (2.5L/day) increases renal clearance of metabolic waste by 40%. Adding lemon provides citrate, which prevents kidney stone formation (Kidney Int, 2025).
► Fiber: Psyllium husk (10g/day) binds bile acids and toxins in the gut, increasing fecal excretion of metabolic waste by 50% and reducing enterohepatic recirculation (Am J Gastroenterol, 2025).
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Broccoli sprout and avocado smoothie with lemon and ginger | Sulforaphane + glutathione (avocado) + citric acid + gingerol. Nrf2-activating reset drink. |
TUESDAY | Grilled chicken breast with steamed broccoli and brown rice | Amino acids (Phase II) + sulforaphane + fiber. Clean protein for liver support. |
WEDNESDAY | Beetroot, carrot, and ginger juice, then lentil soup | Betaine (liver methylation) + beta-carotene + gingerol + fiber. Detox support sequence. |
THURSDAY | Poached eggs with wilted greens, garlic, and sourdough | Cysteine (eggs) + chlorophyll + allicin + probiotics. Glutathione-building breakfast. |
FRIDAY | Baked salmon with kale, quinoa, and turmeric dressing | Omega-3 + sulforaphane + complete protein + curcumin. Anti-inflammatory reset plate. |
SATURDAY | Water kefir with pomegranate, then vegetable stir-fry with tofu | Probiotics + punicalagins + isoflavones + fiber. Gut reset New Year's Eve. |
SUNDAY | New Year's Day brunch: eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and spinach | Choline + omega-3 + iron + folate. 2026 begins with nutrient density and intention. |
ORIM Tip: Grow broccoli sprouts at home: soak seeds overnight, drain, rinse twice daily for 3-5 days. The sprouts contain 20-100x more sulforaphane than mature broccoli and are the most potent natural activator of the body's detoxification genes.

"Do not look for detoxification in a bottle. Your liver, kidneys, and gut are the most sophisticated detoxification system ever engineered. Your job is to give them the right raw materials and get out of the way." Chris Masterjohn, Mastering Nutrition Podcast, 2023 |
