ORIM Weekly W50 2025
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 50 December 15-21, 2025 |
EDITORIAL
The winter solstice approaches, marking the longest night and the return of light. This week, we honor the ancient connection between the solstice and renewal by exploring the science of autophagy, the cellular recycling process that removes damaged components and rejuvenates every cell in the body.

Fasting for 24-36 Hours Activates Deep Autophagy
A study in Nature Cell Biology (Dec 2025) used advanced imaging to show that autophagy activation begins at 12 hours of fasting, reaches moderate levels at 24 hours, and achieves deep cellular recycling (including mitophagy) at 36 hours. The process clears senescent proteins, damaged mitochondria, and intracellular debris.
Spermidine-Rich Foods Mimic Fasting Autophagy
A clinical trial at the University of Graz (Dec 2025) demonstrated that dietary spermidine (from wheat germ, aged cheese, mushrooms, and soybeans) activates autophagy pathways without fasting. Participants consuming 1.2mg spermidine daily showed 20% improvement in cardiac function and 15% reduction in inflammatory biomarkers.
Autophagy Declines 50% After Age 60
Research in Aging Cell (Dec 2025) quantified the age-related decline in autophagy: compared to age 30, autophagic flux at age 60 is 50% lower and at age 80 is 75% lower. This decline correlates with accumulation of damaged proteins (Alzheimer's amyloid, Parkinson's alpha-synuclein) and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Autophagy: The Body's Winter Cleaning
Yoshinori Ohsumi's Nobel Prize-winning discovery of autophagy mechanisms (2016) has spawned a decade of clinical research. A 2025 comprehensive review in Cell demonstrated that autophagy performs 4 critical functions: (1) removes damaged mitochondria (mitophagy), (2) degrades misfolded proteins, (3) recycles cellular components for energy during fasting, and (4) destroys intracellular pathogens. Enhancing autophagy through fasting, exercise, and specific nutrients is now considered a cornerstone of longevity science.
The solstice fast: consider a 24-hour fast from dinner on the solstice to dinner the next day. This activates deep autophagy and symbolically aligns with the ancient tradition of renewal at the darkest moment.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Spermidine: Wheat germ contains 24mg spermidine per 100g, the richest food source. Two tablespoons daily provides a meaningful autophagic stimulus (Autophagy, 2025).
► Exercise: High-intensity exercise activates autophagy in skeletal muscle within 30 minutes, clearing damaged mitochondria and improving cellular energy production (EMBO J, 2025).
► Coffee: Coffee polyphenols (chlorogenic acid) activate autophagy independent of caffeine. Both regular and decaf coffee trigger cellular recycling within 4 hours (Cell Rep, 2025).
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Wheat germ and berry parfait with Greek yogurt and honey | Spermidine (24mg/100g wheat germ) + anthocyanins + probiotics. Autophagy-activating breakfast. |
TUESDAY | Aged Gruyere and mushroom omelette with mixed greens | Spermidine (aged cheese) + beta-glucans + folate. Double spermidine source. |
WEDNESDAY | Green tea and miso broth with edamame and nori (break-fast) | EGCG + Aspergillus + spermidine (soy) + iodine. Gentle autophagy re-feeding. |
THURSDAY | Sardine and fennel salad with lemon and olive oil | Omega-3 + anethole + vitamin C + polyphenols. Anti-inflammatory light meal. |
FRIDAY | Black coffee, then lentil and roasted vegetable soup (16:8) | Chlorogenic acid (autophagy trigger) + fiber + minerals. Time-restricted eating. |
SATURDAY | Soybean and vegetable tempura with dipping sauce | Spermidine + fiber + fermented batter. Japanese spermidine-rich weekend meal. |
SUNDAY | Roast goose with red cabbage and chestnuts (solstice feast) | Complete protein + anthocyanins + complex carbs. Traditional winter solstice celebration. |
ORIM Tip: To boost autophagy without fasting: eat spermidine-rich foods (wheat germ, aged cheese, mushrooms, soybeans), drink coffee, exercise intensely, and maintain a 14-16 hour overnight fast. These combined stimuli activate cellular recycling.
04 | DID YOU KNOW? |
"The cell must destroy parts of itself to renew itself. Autophagy is not self-destruction; it is self-renewal. The oldest wisdom traditions knew this: from the darkest night comes the brightest dawn." Yoshinori Ohsumi, Nobel Lecture, 2016 (adapted) |
