ORIM Weekly W03 2025
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 03 January 20-26, 2025 |
EDITORIAL
Late January and winter is testing our immune defenses. This week, we look at biocontrol delivery by drone and the precise mechanism by which vitamin D activates T-lymphocytes, a discovery with major implications for preventive immunonutrition.

Biocontrol Delivery Drones Scale Up
California-based Pyka is testing fixed-wing drones capable of dispersing biocontrol agents (Trichogramma wasps, Bacillus thuringiensis) over 400 hectares per day. This pesticide alternative preserves pollinator diversity and the nutritional quality of harvested crops.
Industrial Aquaponics in Switzerland
UrbanFarmers in Basel now produces 50 tonnes of vegetables and 5 tonnes of tilapia annually on just 2,500 square meters. The circular system reduces nitrogen footprint by 90% compared to conventional farming while delivering mineral-dense leafy greens year-round.
Pocket Spectroscopy for Consumers
SCiO launched a pocket spectrometer at 299 CHF that analyzes sugar, fat, and water content in food within 3 seconds. A step toward daily nutritional transparency that empowers individuals to verify the quality claims on the foods they purchase.

Vitamin D and Innate Immunity Decoded
Researchers at the University of Copenhagen (Nature Immunology, Jan 2025) mapped the exact mechanism by which vitamin D activates T-lymphocytes. Without sufficient vitamin D (below 50 nmol/L), T-cells remain dormant and fail to respond to pathogens, leaving the body functionally immunocompromised.
ORIM recommends a 25(OH)D level between 75 and 125 nmol/L, well above the conventional 'normal' threshold of 50. The clinical difference is significant.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Autophagy: A 16-hour fast activates autophagy in human liver cells, confirmed by direct autophagosome measurement (Autophagy, Jan 2025).
► Polyphenols: Daily consumption of 500 mg polyphenols (equivalent to 3 cups green tea) lowers systolic blood pressure by 4 mmHg on average (Hypertension, 2024).
► Magnesium: 68% of the Swiss population has magnesium intake below recommended levels (OFSP Nutrition Report, 2024).
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Miso soup with silken tofu, wakame, and spring onion | Isoflavones + iodine + natural probiotics. A gentle start to the week. |
TUESDAY | Spelt risotto with shiitake mushrooms and parmesan | Beta-glucans (shiitake) for immune activation. Complex carbs best at lunch. |
WEDNESDAY | Cod en papillote with fennel and black olives | Lean protein + Mediterranean antioxidants. Easy digestion for midweek. |
THURSDAY | Bean chili sin carne with raw cacao | Iron + cacao flavonoids. Dopaminergic support during the midweek push. |
FRIDAY | Salmon tartare with mango, avocado, and sesame | EPA/DHA + vitamin E. Priming the nervous system for weekend rest. |
SATURDAY | Buckwheat crepes with egg, cheese, and salad | Rutin + choline + folate. A balanced anti-inflammatory brunch. |
SUNDAY | Light pot-au-feu with winter vegetables and marrow | Glycine + collagen + minerals. Slow cooking maximizes bioavailability. |
ORIM Tip: Shiitake mushrooms exposed to sunlight for 30 minutes before eating multiply their vitamin D2 content tenfold (Keegan et al., 2013, Dermato-Endocrinology).
