ORIM Weekly W17 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK April 22-28 |
EDITORIAL
Earth Day falls this week, reminding us that planetary health and human health are inseparable. This week we examine how soil biodiversity directly determines the nutritional quality of our food. The immunonutrition message is clear: healthy soil produces the nutrient-dense foods our immune systems require.

Soil Health and Human Immune Function
A 2023 review in Environmental Health Perspectives established that mineral-depleted soils produce crops with 20-40% lower zinc, iron, and selenium content compared to 1950 baselines. Since these minerals are essential for T-cell maturation and antibody production, soil degradation directly impairs population-level immune competence. Regenerative agriculture is thus a public health intervention.
Chrono-Exercise and Immune Cell Mobilisation
Moderate exercise performed between 07h and 09h mobilises 300% more NK cells than the same exercise at 19h. A 2024 study in Exercise Immunology Review attributed this to the cortisol awakening response, which primes leukocyte adhesion molecule expression. Spring mornings offer ideal temperature and light conditions for this chronobiologically optimal exercise window.
Compost Tea and Crop Phytoalexin Production
Foliar application of aerated compost tea introduces beneficial microorganisms that trigger systemic acquired resistance in plants. A 2023 trial in Biological Control showed that treated tomato plants increased phytoalexin production by 45%, resulting in both pest resistance and higher polyphenol content for human consumers. This biological approach replaces synthetic fungicides.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Dandelion Greens: Bitter Liver Support
Dandelion leaves (Taraxacum officinale) contain taraxasterol, a triterpene that activates bile flow and supports phase II liver detoxification. April dandelions before flowering offer the most concentrated bitter compounds. Their inulin-rich roots additionally feed Bifidobacterium species, creating a dual hepato-protective and prebiotic spring tonic freely available in every lawn.
Harvest: Collect from unsprayed areas only. Young leaves before flowering are least bitter and most nutritious.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Earth Day 2024 theme: 'Planet vs. Plastics' with focus on food packaging alternatives.
► UN FAO reports 33% of global soils are moderately to highly degraded.
► Morning exercise outdoors linked to 25% reduction in spring allergy symptoms in new Finnish study.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Dandelion green and poached egg salad with warm bacon vinaigrette | Morning bitters: taraxasterol stimulates bile flow during peak morning hepatic metabolism |
TUESDAY | Spring risotto with fresh peas, broad beans, and lemon zest | Midday folate: spring legumes deliver peak 5-MTHF for noon-hour methylation |
WEDNESDAY | Miso-glazed salmon with pickled cucumber and brown rice | Lunch fermented plus omega-3: dual immune modulation during active immune surveillance |
THURSDAY | Roasted baby carrots with harissa, yoghurt, and pistachio dukkah | Afternoon beta-carotene: hepatic retinol conversion peaks during metabolically active hours |
FRIDAY | Crab and avocado tostada with radish, lime, and chipotle mayo | Evening zinc and copper: crab provides both trace minerals for overnight immune cell maturation |
SATURDAY | Green shakshuka with spinach, courgette, feta, and herbs | Late morning iron: spinach non-heme iron enhanced by egg vitamin C and organic acids |
SUNDAY | Slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with spring herb salsa verde | Evening carnosine: lamb dipeptides provide overnight muscular antioxidant protection |
ORIM Tip: Eat bitter greens like dandelion and rocket at the start of meals. Bitter compounds stimulate vagal nerve-mediated gastric acid and bile secretion, improving digestion and absorption of all nutrients that follow.
