ORIM Weekly W02 2026
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK 02 January 12-18, 2026 |
EDITORIAL
Week two of the new year and we turn our attention inward, to the gut. This week, we explore the latest breakthroughs in gut microbiome science, including the discovery that microbial diversity is the single strongest predictor of overall health and longevity.

Gut Microbial Diversity Predicts 10-Year Mortality
A Finnish cohort study (Nature Medicine, Jan 2026) followed 8,000 adults for 10 years and found that gut microbial diversity in the lowest quartile predicted all-cause mortality with an odds ratio of 1.9. The association was independent of diet, exercise, BMI, and smoking, suggesting the microbiome is an independent health determinant.
Akkermansia muciniphila: The Next-Generation Probiotic
A Phase III trial (Gut, Jan 2026) confirmed that pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila supplementation reduces insulin resistance by 20%, waist circumference by 2.5 cm, and LDL cholesterol by 8% over 12 weeks. The outer membrane protein Amuc_1100 is the active compound, explaining why pasteurized (not live) bacteria are more effective.
Fiber Diversity Matters More Than Fiber Quantity
A Stanford study (Cell Host & Microbe, Jan 2026) demonstrated that eating 10 different fiber types weekly increases microbiome diversity by 30%, while eating the same total amount of fiber from a single source increases diversity by only 5%. Variety of fiber sources is more important than total grams.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
The Microbiome: Your Internal Ecosystem
The human gut contains 38 trillion bacteria weighing approximately 2 kg. A comprehensive review in Nature Reviews Microbiology (Jan 2026) established that these bacteria produce over 1,000 bioactive metabolites including short-chain fatty acids (butyrate, propionate, acetate), neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, GABA), vitamins (K2, B12, biotin), and immune signaling molecules. Microbial gene diversity exceeds human gene diversity by 150:1.
Your microbiome is an organ. Feed it with 30+ different plants per week, fermented foods daily, and minimal artificial sweeteners (which reduce Bifidobacteria by 50% within 1 week).
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Diversity: People who eat 30+ different plant species per week have 40% more microbial diversity than those eating fewer than 10 (American Gut Project, 2026 update).
► Antibiotics: A single course of broad-spectrum antibiotics reduces gut diversity by 30% for up to 12 months. Targeted probiotic restoration can accelerate recovery to 3 months (Microbiome, 2026).
► Sweeteners: Sucralose and saccharin reduce gut Bifidobacteria by 50% within 7 days and impair glucose tolerance by 15% (Nature, 2026 replicated).
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Kimchi and tofu scramble with scallions and sesame | Lactobacillus + isoflavones + allicin + lignans. Probiotic-rich start to the week. |
TUESDAY | Rainbow salad: 10 different vegetables with tahini dressing | 10 plant species + lignans + calcium. Maximum fiber diversity in one bowl. |
WEDNESDAY | Three-bean chili with roasted squash and coriander | 3 fiber types + beta-carotene + linalool. Prebiotic diversity powerhouse. |
THURSDAY | Kefir and mixed berry smoothie with flaxseed and cacao | 30+ probiotic strains + anthocyanins + lignans + flavanols. Liquid gut therapy. |
FRIDAY | Miso-glazed cod with pickled vegetables and brown rice | Aspergillus + selenium + lactic acid bacteria + fiber. Japanese gut wisdom. |
SATURDAY | Sourdough pancakes with sauerkraut, smoked salmon, and dill | Wild yeast + Lactobacillus + omega-3 + anti-inflammatory dill. Weekend ferment feast. |
SUNDAY | Roast chicken with 8-vegetable roasted medley and gravy | Protein + 8 plant species + collagen (gravy). Diversity Sunday roast. |
ORIM Tip: Keep a plant diversity journal for one week: write down every different plant species you eat (including herbs, spices, nuts, and seeds). Most people discover they eat fewer than 15. Aim for 30 to unlock maximal microbiome diversity.
04 | DID YOU KNOW? |
"The microbiome is the most important organ you did not know you had. It contains 150 times more genetic information than your own genome and makes daily decisions about your health without your awareness." Tim Spector, Food for Life, 2023 |
