ORIM Weekly W35 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK August 26 - September 1 |
EDITORIAL
The last week of August transitions into September, signalling the immunological preparation for autumn. This week we focus on iron status, which peaks from summer dietary diversity but must be consciously maintained as autumn narrows produce options. Our AgriTech section examines harvest optimisation for nutrient density.

Iron Status and Autumn Immune Preparedness
Ferritin levels below 30 ng/mL impair neutrophil bactericidal activity and lymphocyte proliferation. A 2023 meta-analysis in Blood showed that iron repletion restored delayed-type hypersensitivity responses within 8 weeks. Late summer is the ideal time to assess and correct iron status before autumn pathogen exposure increases, using both heme and non-heme dietary sources.
September Equinox Preparation and Circadian Shifts
The 12-minute daily decrease in daylight during late August requires gradual bedtime advancement to maintain circadian alignment. A 2024 study in Sleep Health showed that individuals who shifted bedtime 10 minutes earlier per week during August-September maintained immune function 30% better than those who abruptly changed schedules at the equinox.
Harvest Timing and Peak Nutrient Windows
Vegetables harvested at solar noon contain 20% more vitamin C than those harvested at dawn due to light-driven ascorbate biosynthesis. A 2023 study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that harvest timing alone explained 15% of variation in total antioxidant capacity. Precision harvest timing is a zero-cost nutritional enhancement strategy.

Blackberries: Late Summer Iron and Vitamin C
Wild blackberries provide 0.6 mg iron per 100 g alongside 21 mg vitamin C, creating a self-enhancing iron absorption package. Their ellagitannin content reaches maximum concentration in late August just before full ripeness. The pectin and anthocyanin combination supports gut barrier function while ellagic acid provides antiviral activity against common autumn respiratory viruses.
Foraging: Pick blackberries before September 1 per traditional lore. Late-season berries indeed have lower sugar and higher tannin content.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► WHO estimates iron deficiency affects 2 billion people globally, the most common nutritional deficiency.
► Swiss chronobiology society recommends gradual autumn sleep schedule transition starting August 25.
► UK study shows vegetables from local farms retain 40% more vitamin C than imported equivalents.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Blackberry and spinach smoothie with hemp seeds and oat milk | Morning iron and C: blackberry vitamin C enhances spinach non-heme iron absorption at breakfast |
TUESDAY | Grilled steak salad with roasted beetroot, blue cheese, and walnuts | Midday heme iron: beef provides directly absorbable Fe during peak DMT1 transporter expression |
WEDNESDAY | Pan-seared trout with lentil salad, cherry tomatoes, and herbs | Lunch folate and iron: lentils provide non-heme Fe with trout vitamin B12 for erythropoiesis |
THURSDAY | Roasted aubergine with pomegranate, tahini, and fresh herbs | Afternoon ellagic acid: pomegranate ellagitannins support afternoon antiviral defence mechanisms |
FRIDAY | Mussels mariniere with shallots, white wine, parsley, and frites | Evening iron and B12: mussels provide heme Fe and cobalamin for overnight red blood cell synthesis |
SATURDAY | Blackberry and apple crumble with custard and toasted oats | Late morning pectin: blackberry soluble fibre feeds Bifidobacterium for afternoon SCFA production |
SUNDAY | Roast duck with blackberry sauce, dauphinoise potatoes, and green beans | Evening complete nutrition: duck provides iron, B12, and zinc for overnight comprehensive immune support |
ORIM Tip: Pair vitamin C-rich foods with iron-rich meals to triple non-heme iron absorption. A glass of orange juice with spinach transforms a poorly absorbed plant iron source into an effective iron delivery system.
