ORIM Weekly W14 2024
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK April 1-7 |
EDITORIAL
Spring has arrived, bringing a surge of pollen and new immune challenges. April marks the transition from winter pathogen defence to allergen management. This week we explore how the immune system recalibrates its TH1/TH2 balance and how spring nutrition supports this critical shift.

TH1/TH2 Balance and Seasonal Allergies
Spring triggers a shift from TH1-dominant winter immunity toward TH2-mediated responses, increasing susceptibility to allergic reactions. A 2023 study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that omega-3 fatty acids at 2 g daily rebalanced TH1/TH2 ratios and reduced eosinophil counts by 25% in seasonal allergy sufferers over 8 weeks.
Morning Light and Serotonin-Immune Crosstalk
Spring morning light stimulates retinal melanopsin receptors, driving serotonin synthesis in the dorsal raphe nucleus. Serotonin receptors on dendritic cells modulate antigen presentation. A 2024 study in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity showed that 30 minutes of morning outdoor light increased salivary IgA by 18% within one week, linking mood and mucosal immunity.
Spring Soil Microbiome Reactivation
As soil temperatures exceed 8 degrees Celsius, dormant bacterial communities resume nutrient cycling. A 2023 study in ISME Journal showed that spring soil microbial biomass doubles within 3 weeks, releasing plant-available phosphorus and zinc critical for early-season crop nutrition. Timing of planting relative to this microbial awakening determines harvest nutrient density.

Wild Garlic: Spring Allium Powerhouse
Wild garlic (Allium ursinum) emerges in April with allicin concentrations 30% higher than cultivated garlic. Allicin modulates NF-kB signalling and reduces histamine release from basophils. Its brief 6-week season makes April the optimal window for harvesting this potent immunomodulatory herb from forest floors and hedgerows.
Caution: Positively identify wild garlic by its garlic scent. Lily-of-the-valley and autumn crocus lookalikes are toxic.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► European pollen season now starts 11 days earlier than in 1995 due to warming.
► Swiss forest foraging permits available from April 1 in most cantons.
► New soil thermometer app helps farmers time planting to microbial awakening cycles.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Wild garlic and goat cheese frittata with spring salad | Morning allicin: garlic organosulfur compounds activate morning detox pathways |
TUESDAY | Spring pea and mint soup with sourdough croutons | Midday folate: fresh peas deliver 5-MTHF during peak methylation activity |
WEDNESDAY | Pan-seared rainbow trout with new potatoes and watercress | Lunch omega-3: trout EPA supports daytime anti-inflammatory eicosanoid production |
THURSDAY | Asparagus and broad bean salad with pecorino and lemon | Afternoon glutathione: asparagus GSH supports post-lunch hepatic detoxification |
FRIDAY | Thai green curry with tofu, sugar snap peas, and jasmine rice | Evening galangal: anti-inflammatory gingerols reduce nocturnal cytokine production |
SATURDAY | Radish and butter tartine with flaky salt and fresh chives | Late morning glucosinolates: radish isothiocyanates activate phase II enzymes |
SUNDAY | Roast spring lamb with artichoke hearts, peas, and rosemary jus | Evening carnitine: lamb L-carnitine enhances overnight fatty acid beta-oxidation |
ORIM Tip: Make wild garlic pesto and freeze in ice cube trays. Allicin degrades within 24 hours of crushing, but freezing preserves thiosulfinates for up to 6 months, extending the 6-week foraging season year-round.
