ORIM Weekly W48 2023
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK November 27 - December 3 |
EDITORIAL
As November gives way to December, we enter the season of darkness and reflection. The shortest days demand the brightest nutrition. This week focuses on vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, and how supplementation, food sources, and light therapy bridge the winter UV gap.

Winter Vitamin D Crisis: Prevalence and Consequences
By December, 60-80% of Northern European populations have vitamin D levels below 20 ng/ml, the threshold for immune competence. A 2023 meta-analysis in the BMJ confirmed that daily vitamin D supplementation at 400-1000 IU reduced respiratory infection risk by 12%, with effects most pronounced in severely deficient individuals where risk reduction reached 42%.
Vitamin D Receptor Expression in Immune Cells
The vitamin D receptor is expressed in virtually all immune cells, including T-cells, B-cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. A 2022 review in Frontiers in Immunology detailed how calcitriol (active vitamin D) enhances antimicrobial peptide production, promotes regulatory T-cell development, and shifts the immune response from pro-inflammatory Th1/Th17 toward tolerance-promoting Th2/Treg pathways.
Light Therapy Technology for Circadian-Immune Support
Modern light therapy devices delivering 10,000 lux at appropriate spectral frequencies can partially compensate for winter's reduced photoperiod. A 2023 study in the Journal of Affective Disorders showed that 30 minutes of morning light therapy improved serotonin metabolism, cortisol rhythms, and NK cell activity during winter months, providing non-pharmacological immune support.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Cod Liver Oil: Winter's Liquid Gold
Traditional Nordic cod liver oil provides 1,360 IU of vitamin D3 and 4,500 IU of vitamin A per tablespoon, alongside EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. This combination of fat-soluble vitamins and anti-inflammatory fatty acids in a single food is unmatched for winter immune support. Modern lemon-flavored formulations have eliminated the unpleasant taste of historical preparations.
One tablespoon of quality cod liver oil provides more vitamin D than 10 glasses of fortified milk, more vitamin A than 5 carrots, and more omega-3 than a serving of salmon.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► Swiss Federal Office of Public Health launches winter vitamin D awareness campaign across all cantons.
► Light therapy lamp sales increase 300% in November as seasonal affective disorder awareness grows.
► Nordic cod liver oil traditions gain Swiss market share as evidence for winter immune supplementation strengthens.
