ORIM Weekly W07 2023
ORIM WEEKLY The weekly letter on preventive immunonutrition | WEEK February 13-19 |
EDITORIAL
Valentine's week invites us to consider the heart-immune connection. Cardiovascular health and immune function share common inflammatory pathways. This week we celebrate foods that nourish both the heart and our defenses.

Cardiovascular-Immune Axis: Shared Pathways
Atherosclerosis is now recognized as a chronic inflammatory disease driven by immune cells. A 2023 review in Nature Cardiovascular Research demonstrated that monocyte-derived macrophages in arterial plaques respond to the same dietary anti-inflammatory signals as infection-fighting immune cells, linking heart-healthy eating directly to immune optimization.
Olive Oil Polyphenols and Arterial Health
Extra-virgin olive oil contains oleocanthal, which exhibits ibuprofen-like anti-inflammatory activity. The PREDIMED trial follow-up published in the European Heart Journal (2022) confirmed that 40 ml daily of high-polyphenol EVOO reduced cardiovascular events by 31% and improved leukocyte function, demonstrating dual cardio-immune benefits.
Heart Rate Variability as Immune Biomarker
Vagal tone measured through heart rate variability correlates with immune regulation via the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. A 2022 study in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity found that individuals with higher HRV showed faster resolution of acute inflammation and more efficient pathogen clearance, suggesting cardiovascular fitness directly supports immune efficiency.
02 | BIOLOGICAL ADVANCES |
Pomegranate: Cardio-Immune Superfruit
Pomegranate arils contain punicalagins and ellagic acid, which are converted by gut bacteria into urolithins with potent anti-inflammatory and mitochondrial-rejuvenating properties. A 2022 clinical trial showed daily pomegranate consumption improved arterial elasticity by 12% while enhancing NK cell cytotoxicity against viral targets.
The white pith surrounding pomegranate arils is rich in fiber and additional polyphenols. Blend whole arils including pith for maximum cardio-immune benefit.
THIS WEEK IN BRIEF
► American Heart Association recognizes immunonutrition as emerging strategy for cardiovascular disease prevention.
► Swiss Heart Foundation promotes Mediterranean diet adherence for combined heart and immune health.
► Wearable HRV monitors now validated for tracking immune recovery in clinical rehabilitation settings.
03 | ORIM OF THE WEEK: CHRONOBIOLOGICAL RECIPES |
DAY | MAIN MEAL | CHRONO PRINCIPLE |
MONDAY | Mediterranean salad with EVOO, olives, tomatoes, and fresh herbs | Lunch 12:00 — oleocanthal absorption peaks with midday lymphatic circulation |
TUESDAY | Grilled aubergine with tahini, pomegranate seeds, and mint | Dinner 19:00 — punicalagins support evening vascular relaxation and repair |
WEDNESDAY | Poached eggs on sourdough with avocado and cherry tomatoes | Breakfast 07:30 — monounsaturated fats and choline for morning cardiovascular priming |
THURSDAY | Red wine-braised lentils with rosemary and garlic croutons | Lunch 12:30 — resveratrol and plant protein for anti-inflammatory midday nutrition |
FRIDAY | Pan-seared scallops with cauliflower puree and truffle oil | Dinner 18:30 — taurine from shellfish supports cardiac rhythm and immune signaling |
SATURDAY | Fig and walnut salad with goat cheese and honey dressing | Brunch 10:30 — arginine from walnuts supports nitric oxide for weekend recovery |
SUNDAY | Slow-roasted lamb shoulder with ratatouille and couscous | Lunch 13:00 — carnitine from lamb supports mitochondrial energy for immune cells |
ORIM Tip: Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil over finished dishes rather than cooking with it at high heat. Raw EVOO preserves oleocanthal and hydroxytyrosol, the two polyphenols most responsible for its anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects.
